History of Tower Bridge
In the late 1800s, London wanted to build a new bridge over the Thames just below London Bridge. The problem was they didn’t want to disturb the river traffic so they put out a design competition. In 1884 the portraits of Mr. Horace Jones and Mr. John Wolf Barry were selected.
It took 8 years, more than 400 workers, and 11,000 tons of steel to build the bridge. Opened by Edward IV, construction of the bridge began in 1886 and it opened to the public on June 30, 1894. In the early twentieth century, the Tower Bridge was considered a key target for World War I enemies’ eyes and Management had to do what they could to enhance the safety of the port and the strength of the bridge. However, the bridge was susceptible to attack but did not affect its durability. The Tower Bridge Exhibition opened in 1982, giving visitors an in-depth look at the unique and rich history of Tower Bridge. Today, it attracts more than 40,000 visitors a day, making it one of London’s top attractions.

One of the main tourist attractions for visitors to Tower Bridge is the exhibits, located on the towers and elevated walkways. Using museum film and photographs, the exhibition explores the construction of the bridge and provides access to what were the sources of power behind the hydraulic bascule – a steam engine – Adult tickets cost £11.40 while children over age 5 and under can visit for £5.70.
